Our corporate commitment

FINCO 1865 SPA is a historical tannery integrated within the Vicenza tanning district, a leading tanning aggregation worldwide, sharing strategies, technologies, regulations and operating practices which enable to guarantee the highest standards in economic, environmental and social practices.

With regard to the purchase of raw materials, FINCO 1865 SPA buys exclusively European bovine hides, and has carefully selected specific areas of origin and suppliers based on their ability to satisfy quality requirements and to ease any concerns regarding environmental protection and social responsibility.

Our supply chain must guarantee the highest quality standards: farms must ensure healthy living conditions for animal welfare, providing proper nutrition for animal growth. Transportation should not cause undue stress or injuries. The butchering process must be carried out using the most efficient methods with the latest available technology. A high level of care and attention must be paid to the wellbeing of the animal, the meat and the hide.

Our supply chain must be safe: the hides originate exclusively from authorized slaughterhouses which are periodically inspected by the relevant authorities for compliance with food handling/processing, workforce and environmental safety regulations. Any practices that differ from these principles are banned. Our European suppliers guarantee compliance with regulations concerning content of chemical substances (e.g. Reg 528/2012 “Biocides”, continuously updated), as it is the responsibility of public authorities to carry out compliance checks.

Our supply chain must be respectful of workers: in Europe, particularly in the area where hides are procured, trade unions dispose of the most globally advanced legislation and endorsement. We have reasonable assurance that workers in our supply chain are respected, adequately paid and properly valued in the workplace.

Our supply chain must be based on a circular business model: as leather is a by-product of a different business line whose processes are aimed at the production of meat and dairy for the food industry, we can guarantee compliance with the rules of circular economy as we recover an asset that would otherwise be discarded as waste, causing a significantly negative impact on the environment.

Our supply chain must be respectful of the environment: FINCO 1865 SPA has selected its suppliers by prioritizing their ability to supply fresh unsalted hides. Today 90% of hides we purchase are not treated with sodium chloride to make them resistant to biological deterioration. Where the delivery of fresh hides is not possible, suppliers are requested to issue a statement of compliance with sodium chloride salts used on site. We have arranged supply chains to ensure delivery methods and timings aimed at minimizing the most possible the use of sodium chloride salts, reducing environmental, water and transportation impact. The remaining 10% of hides fall within wet-salted hides or wet-blue production. We ensure a full process control from raw hides to finished, thus granting major awareness on environmental safeguarding and impact of the finished product. This assures the assessment of the quality of the internal production cycle and the compliance to environmental regulations while safeguarding health and safety of workforce, environment and local communities.

Our supply chain must handle animals in a responsible manner:
European legislation on animal welfare is the most strict and detailed globally; moreover, our suppliers comply with private and even stricter protocols issued by major customers in the meat industry, making themselves available for self and on‑site audits and testing programs. There are five programmed freedoms that must be granted to every animal or cattle raised:

Freedom from hunger and thirst

Freedom from discomfort

Freedom from pain and disease

Freedom from fear and distress

Freedom to move and to express normal behavior

The choice to exclude certain areas of the world stems from a sense of responsibility towards animal welfare, avoiding regions that offer fewer guarantees because of less stringent regulations.

Our supply chain must guarantee the highest quality standards:
by concentrating our suppliers exclusively in Europe, we categorically exclude the risk of sourcing raw materials from areas of the world subject to illegal deforestation linked to the search for new areas for livestock farming (see “Embedded deforestation connected to the leather sector”). The European farms from which our cattle hides originate are not intensive or land/resource depleting. The strength of replenishment and regenerative practice in the European forestry industry, as well as the widespread implementation of responsible forest management certification schemes, does not allow uncontrolled changes in land use or the felling of forest stands.

No one shall be held in servitude. No one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labor.”

Our policies on slavery, human trafficking and child labour

“Modern slavery” refers to the offences of human trafficking, slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour. This can be considered under the following headings:

- sexual exploitation of adults;

- trafficking of adults into conditions of labour and criminal exploitation;

- trafficking of minors into conditions of sexual, criminal or labour exploitation;

- “Human trafficking” involves the recruitment, transfer or obtaining of an individual through coercion, abduction, fraud or force to exploit them.

- “Modern slavery” includes victims who have been brought from overseas and vulnerable people in Italy who are forced to work illegally against their will across many different sectors such as agriculture, hospitality, construction, retail and manufacturing.

The use of child labour is not permitted at Finco 1865 S.p.A. We support the development of legitimate workplace apprenticeships, work experience and cooperative programmes for the educational benefit of young people in partnership with reputable educational and training bodies. Finco 1865 S.p.A. does not employ any person below the legal age limit at the workplace. No employee is made to work against his/her will or to work as bonded/forced labour, or be subject to corporal punishment or coercion of any type related to work.
Finco 1865 S.p.A. will not use involuntary prison or forced labour in any of its operations or in the manufacture of our products. The company is committed to ensuring that there is no modern slavery or human trafficking in our supply chain or in any part of our business. Our Modern Slavery Statement reflects our commitment to acting ethically and with integrity in all areas of our business relationships and to implementing and enforcing effective systems and controls to ensure that slavery and human trafficking is not taking place anywhere in our supply chain.
As part of our initiative to identify and mitigate risk, the following actions are undertaken:
- Direct recruitment of employees to the company and screening processes to verify identity and right to work. This includes a statement from the employee about previous work experience, skills and education to be used in the interview process. Reference checks are conducted in appropriate circumstances.

- Copies of passports must be provided to ensure the right to work and age requirements. The employee provides a personal, direct bank account (not shared) to facilitate direct payment of wages to the employee.

- Where possible, long-standing relationships with local suppliers and contractors are preferred and expectations regarding business behaviour within the supply chain are communicated.

- The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of the company Human Resources department, which does not permit minors to enter the factory site as workers. There is a zero-tolerance policy towards such violations.

- Employment contracts and other records, documenting all relevant details of employees, including age, are maintained by Finco 1865 S.p.A. under its own responsibility for data retention and protection, and are open to verification by any authorised personnel or relevant statutory body.

- Systems are in place to encourage the reporting of concerns and the protection of whistle-blowers.

Supplier/Contractor adherence to our values

Finco 1865 S.p.A. adopts zero tolerance towards modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour. All those in our supply chain and contractors are required to comply with the above. Management and Responsible Officers must ensure compliance in their respective departments and in relationships with suppliers and external parties.

Finco 1865 S.p.A. maintains a list of subcontractors/suppliers. To ensure that all those in our supply chain and subcontractors comply with our values, voluntary checks are carried out on all subcontractors and suppliers before allowing them to become a supplier to the company.
The prevention of any form of modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour forms part of the contract with all subcontractors/suppliers, subject to confirmation that no part of their business operations contradicts this policy. As a company, Finco 1865 S.p.A. is committed to tackling modern slavery and human trafficking and to working with suppliers who share these actions.

Training

To ensure a high level of understanding of the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking in supply chains and activities, certified professional training is provided to relevant members of staff. All Management is aware of the procedures.

The above is a concrete aid for employees, partners, customers and suppliers to better understand these issues and understand how to report any suspicions they may have in relation to modern slavery and human trafficking. The topic of Modern Slavery, human trafficking and child labour continues to be highlighted in the induction training undertaken by new hires starting at Finco 1865 S.p.A.

Reporting concerns

It is up to each of us to ask questions whenever we feel direction is unclear and to challenge and report any suspected unethical business conduct, violation of this statement, or violation of our policies or procedures. Asking questions, reporting concerns and actively pursuing clarity about our choices or actions helps us identify and avoid problems more effectively. If in doubt about the right choices, actions or potential violations, please discuss them first with Managers, Directors or Human Resources. All reports of potential violations will be taken seriously and handled appropriately through follow-up steps such as investigations, remedies and, where necessary, corrective actions to address issues and avoid recurrence.

All employees have an obligation to report knowledge or suspicion of slavery or human trafficking. Any genuine suspicion or knowledge of slavery or human trafficking must be immediately reported to the HR Manager and the Operations Director, who will decide what further actions are deemed necessary. In addition, Finco 1865 S.p.A.’s Protected Disclosure Policy provides alternative channels for reporting, including in case of suspicion or knowledge of slavery or human trafficking. Employees who raise concerns about slavery or human trafficking in good faith may do so without fear of discrimination or retaliation.
